International Volunteer Day (IV Day), a United Nations led initiative, is celebrated annually on the 5th of December. Let’s use this day to show our appreciation to the regions volunteers, because individuals and communities benefit considerably as a result of volunteers and volunteering.
New Zealand boasts the highest rate of volunteering in the OECD with kiwis spending an average of 13 minutes a day volunteering; this is significant when compared to the global average, which is only 4 minutes a day (Better Life Index, 2015)
There is little doubt that New Zealand organisations need their volunteers. Volunteering New Zealand (VNZ) found that 81 per cent of volunteer-involving organisations acknowledged that volunteers are essential to achieving their goals, in a recent survey of the community sector.
Join us in recognising our local volunteers – get some publicity in the media, put on a thank you morning tea or treat them all to dinner out! Find a way to thank them suitably and let them know how valued they are!
